There should be no doubt why, over its 35 year history, Scenic Landscaping has become the premiere landscape design/build and construction firm in the tri-state area. Acting much like the maestro of a gigantic landscaping orchestra, Scenic masters the art of coordinating every aspect and detail required to install and maintain your masterpiece landscape. You can confidently think of us as a "one-stop shop" for all your landscaping needs, from initial consultation right on through caring for your landscape after it's installed.
Our accomplished staff of landscape architects, field supervisors, horticultural experts, masons, installers, and groundsmen, complimented by the finest and most skilled contractors and plant locators in the business, can and will do virtually anything to build the garden of your dreams. The professionals of Scenic relish the opportunity to approach and seize challenges (Oh, and do we have stories!). Mitch Knapp, president of Scenic Landscaping, puts it best: "If we can't do it right, then we're not interested in doing it. And since our job is to interpret your landscaping dreams, there's very little that we can't achieve."
Serving as the backbone of any fine landscape design, stonework and brickwork act as the stage upon which all other elements of the landscape symphony perform. At Scenic Landscaping, we orchestrate the design and construction of the "hardscape" elements of your landscape design with the utmost attention to detail and function. Every note, whether it be an old-world handtooled wall, flame-cut stonework, or even an intricate pattern made of cast pavers, is played out with precision, elegance, and structural strength in mind.
At Scenic, we pride ourselves in making every project unique. If you can dream it, we can do it. Our accomplished designers and craftsmen are experts in all aspects of stone, wet and dry-laid flat stone, brick, and paver installation---often installing inlays, borders, and patterns not seen on any other projects.
And, this all goes without saying: With a strong and functional backbone, your Scenic landscape installation will not only please your eye, it will serve its intended function for many years to come.
One of the most misunderstood and, unfortunately, neglected aspects of landscape design and construction is drainage. While plants thrive with the proper amounts of moisture, too much water (or too little water) will adversely affect all that grows in your new gardens. (And, if you think about it, different plants require different amounts of moisture.) Not to mention, a poorly-drained garden will be subject to washouts and waterlogging which also will affect plant growth and could affect the integrity of masonry construction (especially in freezing weather).
Gardens constructed by Scenic are designed to minimize the risks of either too much or too little water. Working with its design arm, Tapestry Landscape Architecture, Scenic assesses all drainage needs before they become expensive long-term headaches for the homeowner. Through proper soil amendment, bed preparation, grading, controlled irrigation, and other methods for assuring proper moisture conditions for sustained plant growth, a landscape constructed by Scenic will provide gardening enjoyment without water worries.
A gazebo? A trellis? Maybe a few nicely-styled pots, and perhaps a garden statue... or something as simple as a well-picked, well-placed rock...
One of the best ways for a homeowner to add his or her own touch of personal taste and style to a garden is by using garden ornaments and specialized garden structures. Much like decorations which you place inside your home, these items bring the"finishing touch" to a garden. Some ornaments provide practical support for specific plantings, while others invite nature to join in the garden celebration. And, while some add comfort and function to a garden space, many are simply accent points or conversation pieces which spark the imagination of all who visit and linger in the garden.
Scenic Landscaping provides all the knowledge and resources to assist clients to select the right "landscape trimmings" to compliment their lifestyle. Many items are on display at our private nursery and design office, right alongside our selection of customer-preferred nursery stock. If you've got something specific in mind, Scenic will make every effort to locate those hard-to-find special items for you. From simple pots, statues, and beautifully-planted urns to benches, full-scale gazebos, and pergolas, Scenic Landscaping is here to help select, supply, deliver, and install anything which the customer desires.
Imagine yourself on a cool evening, sitting in a chair in your garden, relaxed and at peace, with a warm, mystic glow all around you... the glow from the distinctive landscape lighting which was installed in your Scenic landscape. New forms and shapes become visible in your garden which you never noticed during the day. Rocks take on a new face; you see your plants and flowers from a bewitching new perspective. Your home takes on a romance and charm that you've only seen in magazines. Even the lighting fixtures themselves elevate your garden to a new level of class and perfection.
In landscape design today, little else has garnered as much popularity as outdoor lighting. Aside from its obvious role to provide nighttime accessibility, lighting in your garden enhances the security of your home while it also sets mood. Outdoor lighting today can be as creative, versatile, and functional as it is indoors... whether it be ambient lighting (where the light fixtures are never seen), fiber optic lighting (for underwater use in pond or pool), ornamental lighting (where the fixture or light pattern itself is an element in the design), or whatever. Your imagination is the limit, and Scenic Landscaping is here to help design and install it.
Scenic can professionally install any type of lighting, from the new low-voltage systems to direct-line setups, with timers, sensors, and remote controls. Lighting can be installed at any time, but to ensure minimum disruption to your gardens, we suggest you consider it when planning your job. Whatever your choice, we're sure that you'll be quite impressed when the sun goes down.
Scenic Landscaping got its start over 35 years ago as a garden maintenance company, and despite all the emphasis we place today on design and installation, we have not forgotten our roots. Aftercare and maintenance of your installation is our highest priority. Your landscape is a sizeable investment; and so long as it's in prime shape, it enhances the value of your home. What good is your investment if your valuable plantings go without care?
Scenic employs several year-round full-time garden enhancement crews whose job it is to care for your valuable installation during every season of the year. While keeping your landscape in the utmost condition, they also do things to ensure that you have maximum color and visual interest during each season. Here is a sample of what you can expect them to do during each season:
SPRING:
- Service to perennials and winter-damaged shrubs (trimming, cleanup)
- Address drainage issues
- Soil remediation
- Perennial splitting (division)
- Fertilization
- Transplanting
- Small plantings (annuals, perennials, and small shrubs)
- Mulching
SUMMER:
- Watering
- Pruning
- Integrated pest management programs
- Summer rotations of plantings in pots and gardens
FALL:
- Closeout and winterization
- Review plans for the next growing season
WINTER:
- Pruning of ornamentals
- Continuing winterization (application of anti-desiccants, etc.)
While shrubs, trees, and masonry provide shape and texture for a landscape, perennials and annuals add color, balance, and interest to the garden. Through knowledge of what blooms seasonally, Scenic Landscaping can assure you that something will be blooming or providing interest during the entire year. By mixing flowering shrubs, bulbs, perennials, and annuals, garden color is no longer a spring-only event. Even winter is not excluded!
At Scenic Farms Nursery and at our headquarters, Scenic provides a wide selection of the best perennial cultivars and hybrids which produce the best and longest flowering seasons. Our senior horticulturists will assist you to choose those varieties which suit the light, soil, and moisture conditions in different parts of your gardens. They also have the knowledge and resources to help you to choose deer-resistant plantings so that your investment, hopefully, won't end up as Bambi's lunch!
Speaking of color, how about annuals? Annuals provide instant color gratification and also provide the longest show of color. But, as you know, most garden centers have a lot of the "same old, same old". Scenic provides relief by offering an extensive variety of exotic annuals and tropicals which resist the weather (and deer) problems here in the Northeast. (Oh yes, we have the "old standbys" too!) Why settle for the regular old annuals when Scenic can provide you with a fresh outlook?
Furthermore, Scenic's staff will provide the care, feeding, and maintenance of your perennials and annuals throughout the season... we'll even rotate the plants which have "bloomed out" and make sure that you always have fresh color in your garden.
In case you thought that our craft is hewn strictly with hand shovels and rakes, think again! Being a large-scale contractor, Scenic is equipped for the heaviest jobs.
Since most jobs start with a complete site overhaul, it's only logical that we have this equipment at our disposal at all times. New homes, major garden alterations, movement of large plant specimens... all require the use of heavy machines, and we have the skilled, methodical operators on staff and much of the equipment (backhoes, bulldozers, and Bobcats) in our yard. Plus, our experienced project supervisors are all trained and equipped to handle all the needs of your landscape installation.
Another job in which we specialize is the location and transplanting of existing large mature plant specimens for our clients. It's not an easy job. At this size, these "grand old plants" are easily damaged, either on top or down in the root zone. Being Scenic Landscaping, though, "our passion is in the plants", so we gently respect them by taking all precautions while digging, relocating, replanting, and caring for the plant's continued survival.
Known for their passion for perfection in landscape design and construction, staff members of Scenic Landscaping and Tapestry Landscape Architecture often share their knowledge with other members of the community through various activities and educational programs.
Each year, members of our staff teach master-gardener-level courses at several of the adult enrichment schools in the North Jersey area. To help further the concepts of good landscape design, plant care, and practical application of good gardening toward a more-pleasing environment, garden and nursery tours are available for schools, women's clubs, and other interested groups. Scenic also provides career-orientation programs for schools and slide presentations for garden clubs and community organizations.
